This group was formed in 2021 to bring together railway societies that share the objective of researching British railway history. The Line Societies Liaison Group is an informal alliance which meets regularly to share best practice and discuss issues of mutual concern.

Many of these organisations have as their primary focus the history of a particular pre-Grouping railway company, though most embrace the post-1923 railway history of their company’s territory down to the present day. The Liaison Group also includes organisations whose interests are more geographical than company-specific, or that study specific aspects of British railway history. A common feature of all these organisations is that amongst their membership there are many people whose interest is in railway modelling.

The Liaison Group holds regular virtual meetings using the Zoom platform and has an active email discussion group, open to all committee members or representatives of participating organisations, on IO Groups. Through these channels, the Liaison Group aims to promote the sharing of best practice in areas such as meetings, policies, archives, etc., ideas for membership engagement, and the sharing of resources.

The Liaison Group members will warmly welcome the participation of relevant societies and organisations not already represented. John Gowers, Chair of the L&NWR Society, acts as the Group’s point of contact, via the address chairman@lnwrs.org.uk.

The list of participating societies and organisations is here.
